Milometry vs Cartracker

If you need a sluitende rittenregistratie, most often to show that a company car is driven under 500 private kilometres a year and avoid the bijtelling, Milometry is not what you need. Cartracker is that, and we are not.

We would rather say so at the top of the page than sell you something the Belastingdienst will not accept.

What the Belastingdienst actually requires

The rule is about the record, not the brand. A trip registration has to be complete, objective and unalterable: every trip logged with the date, the start and end odometer readings, the departure and arrival addresses, the route where you detoured, and a clear split between private and business.

The Keurmerk RitRegistratieSystemen is the independent Dutch certification for systems that meet those requirements. Registered trips cannot be changed after the fact, the mandatory fields are captured automatically, and the data is stored encrypted and exported as PDF or CSV.

Two things about that keurmerk are worth knowing, and both come from the certification body itself. It is not legally required: the Belastingdienst demands a complete, objective and unalterable record, not a particular certificate. And it does not guarantee approval, because it certifies the quality of the system and not the truth of what you typed into it.

Where that leaves us is simple. Milometry keeps your trips on your phone and lets you edit them. That is the point of it for most drivers, and it is precisely why it is not an unalterable record. We are not going to claim otherwise.

What Cartracker does well

It is certified for the job. Both plans carry the Keurmerk RRS. If you are trying to stay under the 500 kilometre threshold, that is the product category you want.

The odometer comes from the car. With a plug and play dongle or a CANbus black box, the readings come from the vehicle rather than from a phone that might have travelled separately. That is the difference between a log and evidence.

What it costs

From 7,00 € per vehicle per month. Hardware and installation are separate and optional.

Their pricing page does not state whether that figure includes BTW, so we are not going to tell you either way. Ask them before you budget.

Where a simple app is still the right tool

Not every Dutch driver is avoiding bijtelling. A zzp'er driving their own car, or an employee claiming the onbelaste kilometervergoeding at 0,25 € a kilometre, is doing a different job: keeping an honest record of business kilometres so the reimbursement can be worked out and evidenced.

For that, an unalterable certified system is more machinery than the task needs, and Milometry is a proportionate answer. One payment. It notices you drove, records the route, totals the kilometres at the Dutch rate, and tracks fuel so a journey can be costed against your real consumption. Which one you should pick

Pick Cartracker if you drive a company car and need a sluitende rittenregistratie, or if you are managing vehicles rather than driving one.

Pick Milometry if you drive your own car, claim kilometres at the published rate, and want a straightforward record you buy once.
